It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A believing man and a believing woman continue to be afflicted in their body, their family, and their wealth, until they meet Allah and there is no sin left upon them." In one narration, children are also mentioned along with family.

Benefits and Issues:
When Allah, the Exalted, loves a servant, He puts him through trials and hardships (al-Sahihah, H:146), and these trials become an expiation for his sins, so that he meets Allah, the Exalted, purified. And sometimes, a certain rank is decreed for a servant in the sight of Allah, but his deeds are not sufficient for him to reach that station, so Allah, the Exalted, puts him through difficulties and thus elevates him to that rank. Some narrations indicate that illness and hardships are a sign of faith. The next hadith clarifies this.
