Hadith 492

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whatever distress, anxiety, sorrow, grief, or pain befalls a Muslim, even if a thorn pricks him, Allah certainly forgives his sins in exchange for it."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
If a Muslim does not wail and lament over the hardship that befalls him, and instead bears it with patience while hoping for reward from Allah, then this hardship becomes an expiation for his sins and he becomes purified. However, if he panics and complains, then he is deprived of the reward.
