Hadith 490

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) relates from Allah the Blessed and Exalted, that Allah Almighty said: "O My servants! Verily, I have made oppression unlawful for Myself and have made it unlawful among you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants! You commit sins by day and by night, and I forgive all sins, and it does not concern Me, so seek forgiveness from Me, I will forgive you. O My servants! All of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask Me for food, I will feed you. O My servants! All of you are naked except those whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing, I will clothe you. O My servants! If the first and the last of you, humans and jinn, were all as pious as the most pious among you, that would not increase My kingdom in the least; and if all of you were as wicked as the most wicked among you, that would not decrease My kingdom in the least, just as dipping a thread into the sea does not diminish the sea. O My servants! These are your deeds which I am keeping count of for you, so whoever finds good should praise Allah, and whoever finds otherwise should blame no one but himself." Whenever Abu Idris Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated this hadith, he would sit on his knees out of respect for it.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ This is a Hadith Qudsi in which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam relates directly from Allah ta'ala. In this, the reprehensibility of oppression is also mentioned. And Allah ta'ala has described His dislike for oppression in a most effective manner: I am the Creator of everything and fulfill all the needs of people, and even though people associate partners with Me, I, despite having power and strength, do not oppress anyone. So how can it be permissible for a human being to oppress another?
➋ No matter how pious a person becomes, he is still prone to error; therefore, he should continue to seek forgiveness from his Forgiving and Merciful (Ghafur Rahim) Lord. He alone is the One who forgives sins, even if the sins reach the heights of the sky.
➌ Allah ta'ala has granted human beings the means of sustenance (rizq), but a person cannot attain anything solely on the basis of his own intellect unless it is granted by Him; therefore, one should ask only from Him. Otherwise, even with wealth, the sword of poverty may still hang over one's head. A believing servant, even after working hard day and night to earn, still says: "He alone feeds me and gives me drink." (huwa yut'imuni wa yasqini) Because even the ability to work hard is granted by Him. Therefore, one should ask for everything only from Him.
➍ If a person chooses the path of obedience, its benefit is for himself, and if he chooses the path of evil, its consequence will also fall upon him. The sovereignty and greatness of Allah ta'ala are perfect and complete. If all creation were to become obedient, His sovereignty is so complete that it would not increase in the least, and if all were to become the most wicked, they could not diminish His greatness in any way. A needle or thread may perhaps reduce something from the sea, but the disobedience of people cannot reduce Allah's majesty even to that extent.
➎ Whatever deeds a person does, good or bad, are recorded. Good deeds will be rewarded with good, and bad deeds will be recompensed with bad; now it is up to the person whether he does good or bad deeds. Allah ta'ala has shown both the paths of good and evil.
