It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Beware of oppression, for oppression will appear as darkness and gloom on the Day of Resurrection. And beware of miserliness, for it was miserliness that destroyed those before you and incited them to shed each other's blood and to make lawful what was unlawful."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ To transgress against people’s wealth, their lives, and their honor is called oppression (zulm). In this world, Allah ta‘ala grants respite to the oppressor, but when He seizes him, then no one can rescue him. His end is destruction in both this world and the Hereafter. In the Hereafter, the light of the good deeds of the people of faith will be before them and they will walk in its illumination, whereas for the oppressors, their oppression will only increase their darkness and there will be no light for them.
➋ It is also possible in meaning that on the Day of Resurrection, a single act of oppression from the world will become the cause of many difficulties from which it will be hard to escape.
➌ By “darknesses” (zulumat), punishment and chastisement can also be meant, for through oppression a person’s heart becomes darkened and he is unable to distinguish between truth and falsehood, which leads to the punishments of the Day of Resurrection.
➍ The highest degree of greed is called miserliness (bukhl), and this is the root of corruption. The soul in which there is generosity does not become entangled in trivial matters, and thus bloodshed does not occur. A miserly person, out of greed for wealth, does not even refrain from the unlawful (haram).
