Hadith 479

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If the Day of Resurrection is about to be established and one of you has a date-palm sapling in his hand, then if he is able to plant it before the Resurrection is established, he should plant it."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, the importance and virtue of planting trees and agriculture is understood, as a person receives reward for it. As long as people continue to benefit from the tree he has planted, it is a continuous charity (sadaqah jariyah) for him.
➋ Just as a person benefits from the trees planted by those before him, in the same way, he should also plant trees for those who come after him so that they may benefit from them. This is not contrary to asceticism (zuhd). Therefore, one should continue striving for both worldly and hereafterly benefit until the last moment of life, and should not abandon good deeds thinking, “How long am I going to live anyway?”
➌ Nowadays, all the policies of Muslims are temporary, and they consider only those benefits which they can witness in their own lifetimes. In this hadith, encouragement is given that a person should not be so selfish as to think only of himself, but rather he should act with far-reaching results in mind. The enemies of Islam are working according to this perspective, which is why they are dominant over Muslims.
