Hadith 478

Harith bin Laqit (may Allah have mercy on him) says that some of us were such that when his mare gave birth, he would slaughter it and say, "What guarantee is there of my life that I will ride it?" Then a decree from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us stating, "Preserve the sustenance that Allah gives you, for indeed the Day of Judgment is still far off."

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that people used to think that the Day of Judgment is near and could come at any moment, so what is the need to safeguard wealth? Therefore, they would slaughter (animals), eat, and dispose of their possessions. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu explained that the nearness of the Day of Judgment does not at all mean that a person should finish all his wealth and sit idly by, thinking that the Day of Judgment is coming. Rather, one should continue striving until the very last moment of life. Moreover, there are many signs of the Day of Judgment that will manifest before it arrives.
