Hadith 473

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Make things easy, do not make them difficult; give people reassurance, do not make them averse."

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that in any respect, do not impose hardship upon people. Always strive to create as much ease as possible, and do not drive people away from Islam by imposing undue strictness in religious matters, such that they become weary and distance themselves from Islam altogether. Where Islam has provided ease, to impose unnecessary hardship is tantamount to making people averse to the religion. For example, forcing people to perform seventeen units (rak‘ahs) of the ‘Isha prayer—many people, due to this, abandon the prayer altogether. Thus, this is essentially something that causes them to become disillusioned with Islam.
