Kathir bin Ubaid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I went to the service of Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: Wait a moment while I sew my pajama. Kathir bin Ubaid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I waited and said: Umm al-Mu'mineen! If I go outside and tell people that you are mending an old garment, they will count it as your miserliness. She said: Speak with understanding; the fact is that whoever does not wear old clothes has no right to new clothes.
Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
The meaning of this statement is that whoever does not wear old clothes is wasteful and extravagant; therefore, a person should be cautious regarding his wealth. Simplicity is beloved to Allah Ta'ala and is a part of faith. The second meaning is that whoever wears new clothes every time, due to his extravagance, a time comes upon him when he has nothing new left to wear. Honor lies in moderation and simplicity. The Mothers of the Believers (Ummahat al-Mu'minin), even after abundance of wealth, used to lead simple lives. May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with them.
