Hadith 462

It is narrated from the noble wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: A group of Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "Death be upon you." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I understood their greeting. I said: "Death be upon you and curse be upon you." She says: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Aisha, stop! Allah loves gentleness in every matter." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Did you not hear what they said? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "I have already said, 'And upon you.'"

Benefits and Issues:
Gentleness is the beauty of everything; therefore, one should adopt gentleness in every matter. Especially, people of knowledge and virtue should overlook the taunts of others, as if they are unaware of them. Imam Shafi‘i rahimahullah says:
A wise and intelligent person is one who displays deliberate ignorance (tajahul ‘arifana), understands the matter, and yet acts as if he has not understood it at all. It is not necessary to respond to every statement. (For further details, see the benefits of Hadith: 311).
