Hadith 461

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "None of you will be saved (from the Fire) merely because of his deeds." They said: O Messenger of Allah, not even you? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Not even me, unless Allah envelops me in His mercy. So remain steadfast and keep close to the straight path. Worship in the morning, evening, and a part of the night. And adopt moderation; you will reach your goal."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Decorating buildings with designs and embellishments is not moderation, but rather exceeding the limits. Moderation is to avoid such kinds of buildings.
➋ Salvation from Hell and entry into Paradise is the greatest success. This is such a precious attainment that a person’s deeds cannot serve as its price. Therefore, in every circumstance, there is a need for the mercy of Allah, and to attain the mercy of Allah, righteous deeds are necessary. The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.”
In summary, deeds alone will not suffice. They will only be beneficial when the grace and mercy of Allah are included.
➌ Some scholars have said that this ruling is from before the revelation of Surah al-Fath. In Surah al-Fath, Allah, the Exalted, gave glad tidings of Paradise to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Companions (radi Allahu anhum).
➍ “Saddu wa-daw...” means that you should remain upright and continue to seek guidance from Allah, the Exalted, and adopt moderation in every matter and avoid excessiveness. Also, worship Allah during the various times of the day and in the darkness of the night, because if a person worships all day or all night, he becomes weary and after a few days of worship, he may abandon it altogether.
