It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by us while I was repairing my hut (which had become dilapidated). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: "What are you doing?" I replied: O Messenger of Allah! I am repairing my hut. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The matter (death) will come even sooner than this."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The purpose of the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that just as if you had neglected this wall, it would have soon collapsed, and therefore you considered its repair necessary, similarly, life may end even sooner than that, so the rectification of deeds is even more important and demands swifter attention. ➋ From this, it is understood that building a house to live in and carrying out its repairs and maintenance is permissible.
