Hadith 454

It is narrated from Qais bin Abi Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him), he said: We went to visit Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he had branded his body with seven marks. He said: Our friends who passed away before us have departed from this world and the world did not decrease their reward in any way. And as for us, we have been given so much wealth that we find no use for it except to bury it in the earth. If the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had not forbidden us from praying for death, I would have prayed for death.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Sayyiduna Khabbab radi Allahu anhu was among the earliest people to embrace Islam. He endured such hardships for the sake of Islam that there was no flesh left on his back. Because he was made to lie on the coals by the enemy, all the flesh was burned away. In the latter part of his life, he became severely ill and had to have many cauterizations on his abdomen.

➋ In the earliest generations, it was the practice of the Muslims that they would exhort and advise one another. Sayyiduna Khabbab radi Allahu anhu advised those who came to visit him during his illness to be disinterested in the world, and warned them to avoid competing in the construction of buildings, and to turn their attention to the Hereafter instead of being enamored with the world.

➌ It is impermissible to supplicate for death due to severe illness or difficulties; however, for a longing to arise in the heart is another matter, for which there is no accountability. If death becomes certain, then to develop a yearning to meet Allah is a sign of perfect faith (iman kamil).
