Hadith 450

It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), I used to visit the houses of the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I could easily touch the ceiling with my hand.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that the houses of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained simple despite the expansion of conquests. During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), there was considerable abundance, yet even then, those houses were not built with grandeur and splendor. This is evidence that constructing large and elaborate buildings was not the practice of the Salaf.
