It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to seek refuge with Allah from bad judgments and from the laughter of enemies.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning of a bad decision is that which a person finds unpleasant and which distresses him. Whether this decision pertains to religion, worldly matters, or family and dependents, seeking refuge with Allah from it is not only permissible but recommended (mustahabb), and it is not contrary to belief in divine decree (qadar). It should be remembered that evil and harm are not attributed to Allah; rather, it is considered evil from the perspective of the servants. An objection is sometimes raised as to how the decree of destiny can be averted; the answer is that making this supplication and seeking refuge is itself part of the divine decree, and its purpose is for the servant to express his own helplessness.

➋ The meaning of the enemies’ laughter is that a person is afflicted with such a condition that his enemies, upon seeing him, become pleased. One should seek refuge with Allah from being afflicted with such a state. A person naturally dislikes calamity, but the pain is especially severe when it is of such a nature that his opponents rejoice over it.
