Hadith 425

Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what tale-bearing and the thing that cuts (relationships) is?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is conveying people's words to one another in order to cause discord."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Tale-bearing (namimah) is an extremely dangerous sin that destroys a person's religion and deprives him of Paradise. The Prophetic statement is:
((Lā yadkhul al-jannah nammāmun)) (Sahih Muslim, Al-Iman, Hadith: 105)
“A tale-bearer will not enter Paradise.”
Because of this, family ties are severed and discord and factionalism arise.

➋ To convey someone’s words with the intention of spreading corruption so that people fight among themselves is unlawful (haram) and forbidden. A person who stirs up discord is not respected in anyone’s eyes. However, conveying something for the sake of reform, when it is legitimate, is not only permissible but also a source of reward.
