Hadith 419

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), two men abused each other. One of them used foul language while the other remained silent, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was also present. Then the second person also responded, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and left. It was said to him: "You have stood up?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the angels departed, I also left with them. As long as he remained silent, the angels were responding to the one who was abusing, but when he replied, the angels departed."

Benefits and Issues:
The chain of narration of this report is weak; however, it is superior to respond to evil with good rather than with evil. As is narrated with an authentic chain in Sunan Abi Dawud (4896), that in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), a man caused harm to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), but Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) remained silent. Then, the man harmed him a second time, and again he remained silent. The third time, when the man harmed him, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) responded and took retribution. When he took retribution, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stood up and left. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said: O Messenger of Allah! Have you become displeased with me? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied: “An angel descended from the sky and was denying what he (the man) was saying about you. When you took revenge, Satan intervened, so when Satan intervened, how could I remain seated?” (Al-Sahihah of Al-Albani, Hadith: 2376)
