Hadith 411

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The gates of Paradise are opened on Mondays and Thursdays, and every person who does not associate anything with Allah is forgiven, except for the man between whom and his brother there is enmity. It is said to the angels: 'Hold off on these two until they reconcile.'"

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Quarreling and disputes are natural occurrences, but they should not take the form of harboring malice. Therefore, the Shari‘ah has set the limit of anger to three days. Prolonged anger beyond this leads to deep-seated hatred and enmity in the heart, which becomes a cause for being deprived of Allah’s mercy.

➋ By mentioning severing of ties (qat‘ al-rahm) alongside shirk (associating partners with Allah), the intent is to show that just as shirk is an obstacle to entering Paradise, similarly, severing ties is also a major sin and a barrier to entering Paradise. Therefore, after a dispute, reconciliation should be made quickly. Mentioning severing of ties together with shirk clarifies its severity; however, due to shirk, all deeds are rendered void and the polytheist (mushrik) will remain in Hell forever, whereas if the one who severs ties is not forgiven by Allah, he will go to Hell, but due to his faith (iman), he will eventually be released from there at some point.
