Hadith 401

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When two people love each other for the sake of Allah Almighty or because of Islam, then separation occurs between them due to the first sin committed by either of them."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this book, the wording is "awwal dhanbin" (the first sin), whereas in other books, such as Musnad Ahmad and others, in the narration of Ibn Umar and others, it is "illa bidh-dhanbin" (except due to a sin), and this is more correct. (Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad: 1/538)

➋ Another meaning has also been derived from this narration: when two people love each other for the sake of Allah, then due to the sin of one of them, this love should not be ended; rather, one should act with forgiveness and forbearance.

➌ According to our translation, the meaning is that the thing which ends love for the sake of Allah is sin. Due to the evil effect (nahusat) of sin, Allah deprives a person of this great blessing. Therefore, some scholars say that when you feel that the attitude of friends and loved ones has changed, know that some sin has been committed by you; thus, repent before Allah, and all matters will be rectified. Similarly, when you see an increase in the love of friends, it is due to obedience and compliance, so be grateful to Allah for this.

➍ From this, it is understood that due to the evil effect of sins, a person faces humiliation and disgrace, and sins are the cause of discord among Muslims. Affection and love are produced through obedience and compliance.
