Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ This narration is weak with these particular words; however, this incident of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma is established through other authentic chains without the raised (marfu‘) wording. In Sahih Muslim, the incident is as follows:
It is narrated from Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma that when he would go to Makkah, he would have, besides a camel, a donkey as well. When he became tired riding the camel, he would ride the donkey, and he also had a turban which he would tie on his head. One day, as he was riding the donkey, a Bedouin passed by. Ibn Umar said to him: “Are you not so-and-so, son of so-and-so?” He replied: “Yes.” So Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma gave him his donkey and said: “Ride on it.” And he also took off his turban and gave it to him, saying: “Tie it on your head.” Some of his fellow travelers said: “May Allah forgive you! You gave the donkey to this Bedouin and the turban as well, even though you used to ride the donkey for comfort and tie the turban on your head.” He replied: “I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: ‘The greatest act of dutifulness (birr) is that a man maintains ties with his father’s friends after his (the father’s) death.’” And this Bedouin’s father was a friend of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu. (Sahih Muslim, al-Birr wa al-Silah, Chapter: The Virtue of Maintaining Ties with the Friends of the Father and Mother... Hadith: 2552)
➋ From this report of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma, it is understood that a person may keep more than one mount, and this does not fall under extravagance.
➌ The righteous predecessors (salaf salihin) used to keep their heads covered; therefore, making a habit of remaining bareheaded is a disliked practice. The blessed habit of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was also to keep a cloth on his head. However, it is also understood from this that removing the cloth from the head while traveling is permissible and is not contrary to dignity, as Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma took off his turban and gave it to the Bedouin, so his head would certainly have become uncovered, and his journey continued.
➍ The best method is that when introducing someone, one should inquire about his name, his father’s name, and his family’s name.
➎ Saying to a friend, “Give such-and-such thing in charity and do not give such-and-such,” or “Do not give so much,” is permissible and does not fall under the category of preventing good deeds, especially when the intention is that the one giving charity himself is in need of it.
➏ If a person has a mount or vehicle surplus to his needs, and another person has none at all, then giving it to him to ride or even permanently is a highly commendable act, as Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma did.
