It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) by her maternal nephew, Awf bin Harith bin Tufail, that Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was informed that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) had said regarding her buying, selling, or giving gifts: "By Allah! Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) must stop this, otherwise I will put a restriction on her." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Did he say this?" The people replied: "Yes." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah, I swear that I will never speak to Ibn Zubair." When the estrangement lasted a long time, Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) sought intercession from the Muhajirun, but Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah! I will never accept anyone's intercession regarding him, nor will I break my vow." After some more days passed, Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to two men from Banu Zuhrah, Miswar bin Makhramah and Abdur Rahman bin Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth: "I beseech you both by Allah, take me to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) by any means, for it is not lawful for her to take a vow to cut ties with me." So Miswar and Abdur Rahman concealed Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) in their cloaks and brought him to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), sought permission, and said: "Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you! May we come in?" Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Come in." They said: "O Mother of the Believers! Shall we all come in?" She replied: "Yes, all of you come in," and she did not realize that Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) was with them. When they entered, Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) went behind the curtain, clung to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), beseeched her by Allah, and began to weep. Outside the curtain, Miswar and Abdur Rahman also beseeched her by Allah to reconcile, but Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did not speak to Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) nor accept his apology. They both said: "Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cutting off relations, as you know, and it is not lawful for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three days." The narrator says that when they gave much advice to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and explained the severity of this matter in Islam, she wept while telling them and said: "Indeed, I have taken a vow (not to speak), and the matter of a vow is very serious." They continued to insist until she spoke to Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) and, as expiation for her vow, freed forty slaves. Whenever she would mention her vow after that, she would weep so much that her scarf would become wet with tears.
