It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) distributed wealth (on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn) as he used to do before (and in this, the Prophet gave preference to the new Muslims). An Ansari man said: “By Allah! Allah’s pleasure was not intended in this distribution.” I said: “I will surely inform the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about this.” So I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him of this in a whisper. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting among the Companions at that time. This matter was very hard on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the color of his face changed, and he became extremely angry, to the extent that I wished I had not informed him (that would have been better). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, Musa (peace be upon him) was harmed with even more than this, but he remained patient.”
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was extremely generous-hearted. He would never send a beggar away empty-handed. Similarly, when spoils of war (mal-e-ghanīmah) would come to him, he would distribute them. After the conquest of Makkah, the Battle of Hunayn took place, and a large amount of spoils was obtained there, which he distributed among the people. However, in order to win over the hearts of the new Muslims, he gave them more. An Ansari objected to this, and when Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu) heard this, he informed the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), upon which he expressed severe displeasure.
➋ From this, it is understood that for the sake of seeking the truth or for well-wishing, it is permissible to convey someone’s statement, provided that the intention is not to cause discord.
➌ Becoming angry upon hearing something false about oneself is not against religiosity; however, the dignity of the people of knowledge should be that they exercise patience over it, act with forgiveness and forbearance, and do not take retaliatory action.
➍ One should not speak ill of the people of knowledge and virtue, and if something from them appears outwardly wrong, one should be patient over it and not comment without knowing its reality.
➎ In religious trials and tribulations, one should follow the footsteps of the pious predecessors (salaf) and keep their incidents in view, so that it becomes easier to exercise patience.
