Hadith 388

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The believer who mixes with people and is patient over their harm is better than the believer who does not mix with people and is not patient over their harm."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Whether living among people is superior or seclusion is better, there is a difference of opinion among the scholars based on various evidences. The preferred view is that it is difficult to declare one aspect as absolutely superior. Its nature can vary according to time, individuals, and place. It is possible that for one person, living among people is superior, while for another, separation and seclusion are better. For example, a person who does not have the strength to endure the harm of people and fears falling into tribulation, for him, seclusion will be preferable; and for one who has patience and forbearance, living among people will be superior.

➋ A person who fulfills the duty of enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil-ma'ruf wa nahi 'anil-munkar) while living among people, and also avoids backbiting and other social evils, and is patient over the difficulties encountered in this path, then without doubt, this is superior to one who cannot do so. However, if a person cannot fulfill the duty of enjoining good and forbidding evil, cannot avoid other social evils, and does not have patience, then for him it is better and superior to remain apart, so that he may be saved from a greater tribulation.

➌ The meaning of remaining apart is not that he is excused from congregational prayer, Jumu'ah, funeral prayer, and other obligatory acts of worship. He will have to perform these in every circumstance; otherwise, he will be deemed a criminal in the sight of Allah, the Exalted.
