Hadith 387

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Lying is not permissible in any form, whether in seriousness or in jest, to the extent that it is not even permissible for any of you to promise something to his child and then not give it.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Telling lies as a joke is also impermissible and forbidden. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
((Anā zaʿīmun bibaītin fī wasṭi al-jannah liman taraka al-kadhib wa in kāna māziḥan)) (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Adab, Hadith: 4800)
“I guarantee a house in the middle of Paradise for the one who abandons lying, even if joking.”
And for the person who tells lies to make people laugh, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has warned of Hellfire.
The Prophetic statement is:
((Waylun lilladhī yuḥaddith fa-yakdhibu li-yuḍḥika bihi al-qawm, waylun lahu waylun lahu.)) (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4990)
“Woe to the one who speaks and lies in order to make people laugh. Woe to him, woe to him.”

➋ Making a promise to someone and then not giving them the thing also falls under the category of lying. Commonly among us, false promises are made to children to appease them, which is a complete sin; therefore, one should avoid making such promises.
