It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: “Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness and obedience, and righteousness paves the way to Paradise. Indeed, a person continues to speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a very truthful person. And beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness and immorality, and wickedness drives one towards the Fire. A person continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a great liar.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Truthfulness refers to the truth of both speech and action, meaning that a person's outward state should be in accordance with his inward state. Whatever he says with his tongue, his heart should affirm it. Such a pure character paves the way for a person towards righteousness, and he becomes accustomed to obedience to Allah. Whether it is a matter of the rights of Allah or the rights of people, or maintaining ties of kinship with relatives, in every matter the person chooses the path of goodness and obedience, the reward for which he receives in the form of honor and respect in this world and Paradise in the Hereafter. The goodness of such a person becomes well-known among people, and Allah Ta'ala names him "Siddiq" (truthful) among the angels in His presence, and they know him as a truthful person.
➋ From the previous hadith, there could have arisen a doubt that lying is not a major evil, since in some situations it is permitted. Here it is being clarified that where permission exists, it is only in extreme cases; there is absolutely no justification for lying for every benefit, because every liar lies under the pretext of some benefit. Lying makes a person corrupt and diverts him from the straight path, and thus, by adopting the path of disobedience, he becomes destined for Hell. Sometimes, even a true Muslim may utter a lie; however, when it becomes a person's habitual trait, then it brings him into the category of hypocrisy. And with Allah Ta'ala, he begins to be counted among the liars.
