Hadith 380

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Show mercy, you will be shown mercy; forgive people, Allah Almighty will forgive you. Woe to those who listen with one ear and let it out the other, woe to those who persist—those who knowingly persist in their sins."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The point of reference in this hadith is showing mercy. The word "arhamoo" (show mercy) is general, which includes even animals.
➋ To ignore and disregard what is said, and not to pay attention to it, destroys a person, as he is deprived of accepting the truth. People of such temperament always fall into misguidance.
➌ Allah Ta'ala has mentioned among the qualities of His servants that they do not persist in their sins. To repeatedly insist on the same sin indicates that one is a habitual offender. True repentance (tawbah) also includes that one does not persist in the same sin again and again.
