It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A woman was punished because of a cat. She had tied it up until it died of hunger, so that woman entered the Fire because of it. Allah knows best. It is said regarding her: When you tied it up, you neither fed it nor gave it water to drink, nor did you let it go so that it could eat the insects of the earth and save its life."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: In this hadith as well, there is encouragement to show mercy towards Allah’s creation, even animals, and a prohibition against killing them in a brutal manner. What is meant here is killing by causing pain. However, if a cat is harmful, it may be killed; but without reason, a cat should not be killed because generally it is harmless.
