It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he had a child with him. He began to lovingly embrace the child to his chest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you show mercy and affection to him?” He replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah is even more merciful to you than you are to this (child). He is the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.”

Benefits and Issues: ➊ Showing kindness to one’s family and dependents is a Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is: ((Khayrukum khayrukum li-ahlihi wa ana khayrukum li-ahli)) (Tirmidhi: 3895) “The best among you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family.” ➋ However much mercy and compassion a person shows to his family and dependents, Allah ta’ala is far more merciful to His creation than that. Therefore, a person should strive to attain the mercy of Allah.
