Hadith 37

Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that we were with Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) one night, and he made this supplication: "O Allah! Forgive Abu Hurairah and his mother, and also pardon anyone who seeks forgiveness for both of them." Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says that we used to seek forgiveness for both of them so that we might become deserving of the supplication of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Among the etiquettes of supplication (dua) is that a person should first pray for himself and then for others. However, before this, praising and glorifying Allah and sending blessings (salat) upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a means for the acceptance of supplication. Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) first supplicated for himself, then for his mother, and then for all those who pray for him. The hadith also explicitly states that when making supplication, one should begin with oneself.

➋ From this, the importance of good conduct towards parents can be understood, as our master Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) showed such excellent treatment towards his mother.

➌ One should strive to obtain the supplications of righteous people, just as Muhammad ibn Sirin (rahimahullah) and his companions would supplicate for our master Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) and his mother, so that they might become deserving of Abu Hurairah’s (radi Allahu anhu) supplication. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also supplicated for those who performed certain deeds, and one should strive to become deserving of such supplications as well. For example, he said:
((رَحِمَ اللّٰهُ امْرَأءً صَلّٰی قَبْلَ الْعَصْرِ أرْبَعًا)) (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Salat, Hadith: 1271)
“May Allah have mercy on the one who prays four rak‘ahs before ‘Asr.”
Similarly, whoever memorizes the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and then conveys them to others, for him too the mercy of Allah is supplicated. Upon the one who sends blessings (salat) upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Allah sends mercy. Besides these, there are many other deeds by which a person can become deserving of supplications. May Allah grant us the ability.

➍ A person should do such deeds that people also supplicate for his parents; this is certainly a cause of reward. Conversely, causing people to curse one’s parents is a cause of punishment.

➎ If one gets the opportunity to keep company with a righteous person, he should strive to acquire the excellent qualities of his character and take lessons for himself. He should also examine the good deeds of that person to see which good actions Allah has granted him this honor through.

➏ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were the friends (awliya) of Allah. The Followers (Tabi‘in) would strive to obtain their supplications, as Muhammad ibn Sirin and his companions did by supplicating for our master Abu Hurairah and his mother. We too supplicate to Allah that He forgive us, our parents, Abu Hurairah, his mother, and all believing men and women. Ameen.
