Hadith 367

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ الْعَطَّارُ قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنِي يُوسُفُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلاَّمٍ قَالَ‏:‏ سَمَّانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوسُفَ، وَأَقْعَدَنِي عَلَى حِجْرِهِ، وَمَسَحَ عَلَى رَأْسِي‏.‏
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named me Yusuf, seated me in his blessed lap, and passed his hand over my head.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that it is permissible to affectionately and kindly place one's hand on the heads of children. In particular, it is recommended (mustahabb) for a religious scholar (‘alim) or elder to show affection to children in this manner. In fact, in narrations, there is also mention of kissing small children.
➋ From this, it is understood that having a righteous person choose a name (for a child) is recommended (mustahabb).
