Sayyida Umm Darda (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit us in Syria on foot from Mada’in. He was wearing a cloak and trousers whose cuffs were rolled up. Ibn Shawdhab said: Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) was seen in such a state that he had wrapped himself in a cloak, his head was shaved, and his ears were hanging and large. He was asked: Have you disfigured your appearance? He replied: True goodness is the goodness of the Hereafter.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The statement of Ibn Shawdhab is weak due to being mu‘dal (a narration with two or more consecutive missing narrators). However, the statement of Salman al-Farisi radi Allahu anhu, that true goodness is in fact that of the Hereafter, is established with a sound chain as a marfu‘ narration (al-Sahihah: 3198). The meaning is that if there is no adornment or beauty in this world, then what loss is there? One should not be overly concerned about this. The real concern should be for the Hereafter. If a person attains goodness there, then it is all goodness.
➋ From this, it is established that traveling to meet one another is permissible, provided that this relationship is for the sake of Allah Ta‘ala or for maintaining the ties of kinship (silat ar-rahm).
