Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so another man praised him (excessively). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Woe to you! You have cut your companion's neck." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept repeating this statement, (then said:) "If anyone must praise someone, let him say: In my opinion, he is such and such, if he truly thinks so, and let him also say: Allah knows best. He is the one who takes account, and no one should declare anyone pure before Allah."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Tamadhuh refers to praising one another in such a way that involves exaggeration. Praise that is based on exaggeration and falsehood is impermissible and haram. ➋ It is permissible to praise someone based on reality, but it is better not to do so in their presence. ➌ If there is a fear that praising someone will lead them to arrogance or make them neglectful of good deeds, then one should not praise them, whether they are present or absent, because doing so is akin to killing them. ➍ If there is no fear of self-admiration or arrogance in a person, then it is permissible to praise them, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) on many occasions. ➎ Instead of making exaggerated claims in praise, one should say: "In my view, he is good; the matter of the inner self is known to Allah Almighty."
