Hadith 330

It is narrated from Abu Jirah bin Dhahhak that the verse of the Noble Qur'an «﴿وَلَا تَنَابَزُوا بِالْأَلْقَابِ﴾» [الحجرات: 11] "Do not call each other by offensive nicknames" was revealed about us, that is, the Banu Salamah. He says that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us, and every man among us had two names. So when the Prophet (peace be upon him) would call someone, "O so-and-so," he would say, "O Messenger of Allah! He gets angry at that name."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that it is impermissible to call someone by a name or title which he dislikes. However, if a certain title has become a means of identification for someone, then it is permissible to call him by that title in order to make things clear to others or to distinguish him from another person, such as “A‘war” (one-eyed), “Aswad” (black-skinned), etc.
➋ It is forbidden to assign bad titles to one another. Similarly, it is also impermissible to make someone known by a bad title.
