Hadith 326

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَرَى النَّكَالَ عَلَى مَنْ أَشَاعَ الزِّنَا، يَقُولُ‏:‏ أَشَاعَ الْفَاحِشَةَ‏.‏
It is narrated from Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him), his stance was that a person who publicizes adultery should be given a severe exemplary punishment. He said that such a person spreads immorality.

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that such a punishment should be given to him that no other person would dare to do the same, because when such incidents are widely publicized, people become emboldened to commit sins.
