Hadith 325

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ شُبَيْلِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ‏:‏ كَانَ يُقَالُ‏:‏ مَنْ سَمِعَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ فَأَفْشَاهَا، فَهُوَ فِيهَا كَالَّذِي أَبْدَاهَا‏.‏
It is narrated from Shibl bin ‘Awf (may Allah have mercy on him), he said: It used to be said: Whoever hears an obscene word and then spreads it, he is like the one who exposes that evil.

Benefits and Issues:
Spreading an evil act is greater than committing the evil itself, because the one who commits the evil may possibly repent, but if it spreads, its harmful effects impact the entire society. Therefore, one should avoid gatherings in which scandals are the main topic of discussion.
