Hadith 321

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Pray against the polytheists. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has not sent me as one who curses, but rather He has sent me as a mercy."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning is that I have not been sent so that I may supplicate to Allah to reject people and distance them from His mercy; rather, I have been sent as a mercy. For the believers, your mercy is evident, but as for the disbelievers, you are a mercy to them in the sense that, because of you, worldly punishment has been averted from them and they have not been destroyed in this world.

➋ The general ruling for disbelievers and polytheists is that supplication should be made for their guidance. However, for oppressors, those who are hostile to Islam, and the rebellious, it is permissible to supplicate against them, as it is established that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) at times did supplicate against them.
