Hadith 311

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Jews came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Death be upon you." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "And death be upon you, and the curse of Allah and His wrath." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha! Be gentle, and avoid harshness and foul speech." She said: "Did you not hear what they said?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you not hear what I replied to them? I returned their words upon them. Then my supplication against them is accepted, and theirs against me is not accepted."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Jews are a people of corrupt nature, and their attitude towards the Prophets (alayhim as-salam) has always been disrespectful. They exhibited the same wickedness towards the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as well. However, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would respond with great refinement and would overlook their behavior so that the objective would be fulfilled and the tongue would remain safe from abusive speech. The reason for this is that a modest person cannot respond to an ignoble person with foul language, nor can he adopt such a manner. In the incident alluded to in the aforementioned hadith, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) responded in a most excellent way. Therefore, when Umm al-Mu’minin, Sayyidah A’ishah (radi Allahu anha), out of her faith-driven zeal, spoke harshly to them, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) advised her to adopt gentleness, because it is only through gentleness that a person’s character is refined.

➋ In the present era, this hadith serves as a guiding light for scholars and religious people, that instead of getting entangled with immoral people, they should act with forbearance.

➌ It is permissible to retaliate against someone’s abusive speech, but there should be no obscenity in it.

➍ If a disbeliever or a sinner curses a Muslim, and the reason for it is the Muslim’s religiosity, then Allah, the Exalted, does not accept his curse. However, on the contrary, the supplication of the Muslim is accepted.
