It is narrated from Yazid bin Babnoos that we presented ourselves before Umm al-Mu'mineen, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and asked: Umm al-Mu'mineen! What was the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She replied: The character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the Qur'an. Have you read Surah Al-Mu’minun? Then she said: Recite! "Certainly, the believers have succeeded." Yazid says, I recited from «﴿قَدْأَفْلَحَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾» to «﴿حَافِظُونَلِفُرُوجِهِمْ﴾»[المؤمنون: 1-5]. She said: This was the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The chain of narration of this report is weak due to Yazid; however, its first part (كَانَخُلُقُهُالْقُرْآنَ — "His character was the Qur’an") is present in Sahih Muslim and others through another chain. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 746)
➋ "Your character was the Qur’an" — the scholars have explained several meanings of this: • The noble character traits mentioned by the Qur’an were possessed by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), meaning that the lofty qualities which the Qur’an commands to adopt, he was characterized by them. • He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would fulfill the commands of the Qur’an and refrain from its prohibitions. It is as if, when a person reflects on the commands and prohibitions during the recitation of the Qur’anic text, the image that forms in the mind of one who acts upon them is the character of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). • The mention of his character is in the Noble Qur’an. Allah the Exalted says: ﴿وَإِنَّكَلَعَلَىخُلُقٍعَظِيمٍ﴾ (al-Qalam: 4) "And indeed, you are of a great character."
➌ The Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would seek knowledge from the Mothers of the Believers, from which it is understood that a man may also learn from a female scholar, provided that the Shari’ah boundaries are observed and there is no fear of temptation (fitnah).
➍ From this, the value and status of the Qur’an is evident, and also that it was revealed for knowledge and action, so that one may shape oneself according to its commands and prohibitions. Therefore, we should, following in your footsteps, shape ourselves according to the Qur’an.
➎ The connection of the hadith to the chapter is as follows: the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated for good character, as is narrated in other reports: ((Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fahassin khuluqi)) (al-Irwa’, Hadith: 74) — "O Allah, just as You have beautified my physical form, beautify my character." So Allah the Exalted accepted his supplication and made his character the Noble Qur’an. Therefore, whoever wishes to follow him should supplicate for good character and make practical efforts for it.
