Hadith 301

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubaidah bin Abdul Hayy (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to him, and there were signs of having taken a bath on him, and he (peace be upon him) was very happy. We thought that he (peace be upon him) had come after having relations with his wife, so we said: O Messenger of Allah! Today you look very happy and cheerful. He (peace be upon him) said: “All praise is due to Allah, it is so.” Then the topic of wealth and prosperity was mentioned, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “There is no harm in wealth with piety, and for a pious person, good health is better than wealth, and a cheerful soul is among the blessings of Allah.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Inner happiness and joy are among the greatest blessings of Allah, because whatever efforts a person makes in life for the world, he does so for inner satisfaction. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to supplicate:
“O Allah! I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow.”
Marriage is also among those blessings of Allah through which one attains purity of soul and inner peace; furthermore, it lowers the gaze and is half of faith. Therefore, young people should not delay in getting married.

➋ Wealth without piety (taqwa) is destruction and ruin, but if piety accompanies wealth, then it is superior to poverty. The reason is that wealth is a trial, and the pious person fulfills its requirements, and the one who succeeds in a trial is better than the one who was never tested. Sufyan al-Thawri (rahimahullah) used to say that in the era of the Salaf, wealth was a disliked thing, but now it is a shield for the believer. He also said that if today we did not have wealth, these kings would turn us into tissue paper. The reality is that today, people of religion—especially scholars whom Allah has granted financial resources—perform the duty of preaching in a much better way, and people also listen to them attentively. Those who live at the mercy of the wealthy cannot even speak the truth.

➌ Health is a very great blessing of Allah. If one does not have wealth but has health, then he can worship Allah; but if one does not have health, even if he has wealth, he remains helpless. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of one’s health and to avoid things harmful to health. However, if Allah grants someone faith, health, and wealth, and he fulfills their rights, then who can be more fortunate than him?
