Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you say about adultery, drinking wine, and theft?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace be upon him) said: "They are extremely evil and lowly deeds, and there are prescribed punishments for them." (And) "Shall I not inform you about the gravest of sins?" (He said they are:) "Associating partners with Allah the Exalted, and disobedience to parents." He was reclining, then he sat up straight and said: "And lying (is also a very great sin)."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: ➊ This hadith is weak in its chain of narration, as Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has explicitly stated in "Da‘if al-Adab al-Mufrad." However, the phrase mentioned in this hadith (Ala unabbi’ukum...) is authentic, and is also found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim. ➋ The matters mentioned in the hadith are confirmed by other authentic evidences: that adultery (zina), alcohol (khamr), and theft are indeed grave crimes, and the prescribed punishments (hudud) are carried out for them. ➌ The details regarding shirk have already been discussed in the previous pages. ➍ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sat up to emphasize the severity of lying. Although lying is a lesser sin than shirk, the intent was to clarify its importance due to its widespread prevalence.
