Hadith 299

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered me to come to him wearing battle dress and armed. So I did as he instructed. When I reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he was performing ablution. He looked up at me and then lowered his head. Then he said: "O Amr! I wish to appoint you as the commander of an army and Allah will grant you spoils of war. I desire good wealth for you." I said: I did not accept Islam for the sake of wealth. I accepted Islam only out of desire for the religion of Islam so that I may be with the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Amr! Good wealth is a good thing for a righteous man."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The use of war attire and weapons, etc., is not contrary to reliance upon Allah (tawakkul). Similarly, it is permissible to take preventive measures against anticipated illness or calamity, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed Amr ibn al-As (radi Allahu anhu) to come armed.

➋ War booty (mal al-ghanima) is good and pure wealth, and it is permissible to desire it.

➌ If wealth is obtained without greed or avarice, there is no harm in taking it; rather, it is blessed wealth. However, if the sole purpose in performing acts of Islam, jihad, or religious matters is the acquisition of wealth or other material benefits, then that is destructive. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“This wealth is very sweet. Whoever acquires it through lawful means and spends it in lawful ways, then it is a very good helper. But whoever takes it unlawfully is like one who eats but is never satisfied.”
That is, if one has contentment of the soul and is not greedy or covetous for wealth, then earning or possessing wealth is permissible.

➍ From this hadith, the virtue of Amr ibn al-As (radi Allahu anhu) is also known, that he was truthful in his Islam. He did not accept Islam for any worldly motive, as is the opinion of some ill-natured individuals. All the companions (sahabah) of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were similarly detached from the world. Even in times of hunger, they would not utter a word of complaint.
