Hadith 293

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The account of a man from among the people before you was taken, and in his record of deeds there was no good deed except that he used to associate with people and was well-off. So he used to order his servants to overlook (the debts) of those in difficulty. Allah, the Exalted, said: We are more deserving of this (forgiveness and forbearance) than he is, so He forgave him.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ This incident pertains to the Children of Israel, which was narrated by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and therefore it now holds the status of a hadith. From this, it is understood that moral values have always been the same: that which was a means of salvation among the Children of Israel is also a cause for forgiveness among us.

➋ Whoever is a monotheist and a Muslim, Allah, the Exalted, can forgive him by accepting even a single good deed of his; therefore, no good deed should be considered insignificant. Overlooking the faults of people and dealing with them gently and with ease is greatly beloved to Allah, the Exalted. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah, the Exalted, will deal gently with the person who acts in this way. In a hadith, Hazrat Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) say:

((Whoever grants respite to a person in difficulty, for every day until the due date of the debt, he will have the reward of charity (equal to the amount), and after the due date, if he grants respite, he will have the reward of double charity for every day.)) (Musnad Ahmad: 5/351)
