Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The reason for the people's silence was perhaps that they had been prohibited from asking questions to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu says that we were forbidden from asking questions to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so we would wish that some intelligent Bedouin would come and ask him questions so that we could learn religious matters. (Sahih Muslim, Al-Iman, Hadith: 12)
➋ This was the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada‘), and people were coming from various regions. They inquired about social issues, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that Allah, the Exalted, has removed hardship and the religion of Islam is extremely easy. However, the act that brings hardship and destruction is to backbite another and eat his flesh. This type of oppression destroys a person. Perhaps the wisdom in mentioning backbiting, leaving aside so many other sins, is that backbiting is the root of all social evils. Because of it, ties of kinship are severed, and even murder and bloodshed can result from it. This was widespread in villages and especially in that society, which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pointed out.
➌ Using medicine outwardly seems contrary to reliance (tawakkul), so they inquired about it. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam not only permitted it but encouraged that treatment should definitely be sought and unnecessary suffering should not be endured. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself also underwent treatment, as he had bandages applied at the time of Uhud. Using medicine is not contrary to reliance (tawakkul), because utilizing means is itself true reliance. However, one must always avoid treatment with what is unlawful (haram), because Allah, the Exalted, has not placed healing in anything unlawful. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed that Allah, the Exalted, has sent down a cure for every disease. If a person cannot access it, that is due to his lack of understanding. However, the cure for some illnesses is in incantation (ruqyah), for some in charity and almsgiving (sadaqah), and for some in supplication (du‘a), but we do not pay attention to these means.
➍ The last sentence is related to the chapter heading (tarjamat al-bab), as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that whatever a person receives from Allah, the Exalted, the best of it is good character, because due to it the majority of people will enter Paradise. Therefore, one should strive to perfect one’s character and conduct.
