It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: If you attain four things, then it does not matter if the rest of the world passes you by: good character, eating what is lawful, truthfulness in speech, and safeguarding trust.

Benefits and Issues: ➊ This hadith is also established as a marfu‘ (attributed) statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. See: (Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah, Hadith: 733) ➋ Good character and a pleasant nature are among the greatest blessings of Allah. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that the majority of the people of Paradise will be those who entered Paradise due to their piety (taqwa) and good character. (Musnad Ahmad: 2/291, and al-Sahihah by al-Albani, Hadith: 977) ➌ The acceptance of deeds and supplications depends on lawful sustenance (rizq halal). Acts of worship performed while consuming the unlawful (haram) have no standing in the sight of Allah. Allah commanded His Prophets, Messengers, and the believers to earn lawful sustenance. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned a person who possesses all the means for the acceptance of supplication, but if his sustenance is unlawful, then a response comes from Allah: his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing and nourishment are unlawful—how can his supplication be accepted? Thus, good deeds can only be truly beneficial when the sustenance is lawful. ➍ Good character and earning lawful sustenance are acts of righteousness; attaining the ability (tawfiq) to do them is a special grace and favor from Allah. By adopting truthfulness, Allah grants this ability, and in Allah’s records, he is written as a siddiq (truthful one). ➎ If all the aforementioned deeds are present, but a person is treacherous towards Allah or towards people, then his deeds are of no benefit, because the Prophetic statement is: ((Lā īmāna liman lā amānata lahu)) (Sahih al-Targhib, Hadith: 3004) “There is no faith for the one who has no trustworthiness.” Therefore, in fulfilling the obligatory commands of Allah and in discharging the rights of people, one must demonstrate trustworthiness. Thus, in this hadith, the rights of Allah and the rights of people have been combined. If a person fulfills them, then this alone is sufficient for his success and salvation.
