It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The best among you in Islam are those who have the best character, while also possessing understanding of the religion."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
If a person possesses understanding of the religion along with good character, and demonstrates good character for the sake of attaining Allah’s pleasure, then that good character becomes doubly effective. Hasan al-Basri rahimahullah has defined a jurist (faqih) as follows: “A true jurist is one who is indifferent to the world, seeks the Hereafter, possesses insight into the religion, and is constant and persistent in worship.” (Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad)
