It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was very merciful and compassionate. Whoever (a beggar) came to him, if he did not have (anything), he would make a promise to him, and if he had (something), he would certainly give it. Once, the iqamah for prayer had been given when a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), grabbed his cloak, and said: "I have just a small matter left, I fear I might forget it, so please listen to me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood with him until he had finished his request, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and led the prayer.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that the people of Arabia were aware of the generosity and good conduct of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and they knew that he was not arrogant like the worldly kings. That is why this Bedouin insisted.
➋ In this, your generosity is mentioned: if you had something, you would give it, and many other generous people do the same. And if you did not have it, you would promise that when it comes, you will give it to them—and very few people do this. This is the highest form of generosity.
➌ From this, it is understood that between the iqamah (call to commence prayer) and the establishment of the congregation, a pause can be made due to some necessity; however, to do so without necessity is disliked (makruh).
➍ If a scholar is engaged in some important matter for a valid reason, the followers (muqtadis) should wait for him with respect and honor. They should not act hastily, as is commonly seen in our mosques. It is narrated from Anas radi Allahu anhu that after the iqamah for prayer had been given, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam continued to converse with a person for so long that his companions began to doze off, and then he led the prayer. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 6292; Muslim, Hadith: 367)
The caretakers of mosques and the worshippers should reflect on this hadith: what status do they give today to the one who stands on the prayer leader’s place of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam? And those who raise an uproar if the imam is late by a minute or two should also change their attitude.
