It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Shall I not tell you about the person who is the most beloved to me among you and who will be the closest to me in assembly among you on the Day of Resurrection?" The people remained silent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) repeated his statement two or three times. The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The one among you who has the best character."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ For good character, it is necessary that a person be modest (have haya). A shameless person and one who speaks indecently cannot possess good character; that is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was free from these faults.
➋ What greater good fortune can there be than for a person to be loved by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), to attain his closeness on the Day of Resurrection, and to be the best person in this world and the Hereafter? This is possible only through good character. A question arises: if a person is negligent in prayer, fasting, and other rights of Allah, but has good character, then what about him? The answer is that one who does not show regard for the greatness and majesty of his Creator and Maker—how can he truly possess good character?
