It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for a mount, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will mount you on the offspring of a she-camel." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! What will I do with the offspring of a she-camel?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are not camels born of she-camels?"
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Whenever the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were in need of something, they would present themselves before the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). If he had something available, he would graciously give it; otherwise, he would excuse himself or promise to provide it in the future. He never rebuked a petitioner nor mocked him. With this particular petitioner as well, he playfully indicated his intention to give, in such a manner that the man did not understand. But when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw that he was becoming distressed, he immediately clarified, saying, “Brother, a camel is also the offspring of a she-camel.”
➋ This also demonstrates the humility of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): he spoke cheerfully even with an ordinary person and did not adopt an attitude of arrogance or pride like worldly people. Furthermore, the etiquette of such humor has been explained for the Ummah.
➌ From this, it is understood that a person should first listen attentively to what the other says and then respond, because often the answer to a question lies within the question itself. When the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “I will mount you,” it clearly meant that he would give a camel suitable for riding.
