Hadith 266

It is narrated from Bakr bin Abdullah, he said that the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to throw melons at each other in jest, but when it came to matters of seriousness (such as honor and defense), they were real men.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In the mentioned narration, some scholars have interpreted the throwing of melons as referring to the peels, because the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade wasting wealth, and how could the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) go against his command? However, there is no harm in taking the literal meaning—that they would throw them at each other and then eat them as well, just as our boys cool watermelons, etc., in the canal and throw them to one another and then eat them too.

➋ The second point that is learned is that jesting should only be for a limited time, not that a person should always behave like a clown. The jesting of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) was not like this. When there was a serious matter, they would treat it with seriousness, as if their joking was never such that they would disregard honor and dignity; rather, they would be those who defended their own honor. Among us, the situation of jesting is such that in jokes, people hurl filthy insults at each other's mothers and sisters, and the other laughs, thereby proving his lack of honor. The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were never like this.
