It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! You joke with us!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Even when I joke, I speak only the truth."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In jokes and humor, it often happens that lies, backbiting, belittling someone, or obscene talk are included; therefore, when the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) had a concern, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that my case is not like that. Even in jest, I do not say anything contrary to reality. Rather, I present the truth in such a manner that it becomes entertaining, as will be evident from the forthcoming ahadith.

➋ It is permissible to joke with a Muslim in order to bring him happiness. This is the practice (seerah) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but even in humor, one must absolutely avoid lying. Furthermore, this joking should be in worldly matters; joking about religious matters is in no way permissible. In fact, at times, a person may even exit the fold of Islam because of it.

➌ Regarding humor, it should also be kept in mind that wasting hours watching dramas in the name of entertainment is not permissible in any way. Moreover, just as telling a lie is a sin, listening to it is also a crime.
