It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you cannot enter Paradise until you accept Islam, and you cannot be (true) Muslims until you love one another. Spread the greeting of peace among yourselves, you will love one another. And beware of hatred and enmity, for it is the shaver. I do not say that it shaves hair, but it shaves the religion." It is also narrated in a similar manner from Ibrahim bin Asid through another chain.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Living with mutual love and affection is not only favored but required in Islam; it is a golden chapter of the religion of Islam that its followers are brothers to one another and their hearts are united. One means of further increasing this affection and love is to make the greeting of peace (salam) widespread.

➋ In order to enter Paradise, it is necessary for a person to be a Muslim and a believer (mumin). Paradise is forbidden to disbelievers (kuffar), and they are eternally in Hell. As for their good deeds, if Allah wills, He will give them their reward in this world, and if He wills, He may lighten someone’s punishment, as will happen with Abu Talib (Sahih Muslim, H: 515). And a Muslim is one who loves the Muslims and harbors enmity towards the disbelievers. This is a fundamental belief of Islam, which in the legal terminology is called al-wala’ wa’l-bara’. Without this, salvation is doubtful; therefore, mutual love and compassion for the sake of Allah’s pleasure is extremely necessary, and love is generated through the greeting of peace (salam).

➌ Malice and rancor are such dangerous diseases that they silently enter a person and destroy his religion, and the person does not even realize it. In a hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has described envy and malice as the disease of the previous nations. According to this hadith, all of a person’s deeds can be ruined due to mutual envy and malice. The killings and bloodshed in the world are the result of this envy and malice; even the first murder in human history occurred for this very reason.
